The Goemon Story
Two Locations. One Spirit. Endless Memories.
Over 30 years ago, Iwao Gan Ishikawa Sr., affectionately known as Gan-san, arrived in San Francisco from Japan with a simple but powerful mission: to share the rich, authentic flavors of Japanese cuisine—and to build a place where people could truly connect. More than just sushi, his vision was rooted in the heart of the izakaya tradition: a casual gathering space for food, drink, conversation, and community.
Inspired by a Legend
Gan-san named his restaurant Goemon, after his namesake Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary outlaw of 16th-century Japan. A folk hero remembered for standing up to corruption and sharing wealth with the people, Goemon became a symbol of rebellion, resilience, and generosity—qualities that would define the restaurant’s identity.

Where It All Began: Goemon Sushi, Sunset District

The first Goemon opened its doors on Irving Street in the Sunset District, quickly becoming a neighborhood gem. Guests came not only for the impeccably fresh sashimi, sushi, and premium sake, but also for the warm, welcoming energy Gan-san fostered. It was a place where good food and drink became the bridge between hearts.
In 2017, Gan-san entrusted his legacy to the PPQ Restaurant Group, a local family of restaurateurs equally passionate about quality and community. Under their care, the Goemon name didn’t just continue—it grew. Built on the true spirit of izakaya—the Edo-era Japanese gastropub tradition—Goemon offered comfort, flavor, and laughter, night after night.
A New Chapter: Goemon Izakaya Bar & Karaoke Lounge, Outer Richmond

Now, Goemon brings its vibrant spirit to a second home on Clement Street in the Outer Richmond District. This dynamic 3,000 sq ft venue blends traditional and modern Japan, featuring:
A full-service Izakaya restaurant
A premium bar with hard liquor, beer, wine, sake, and craft cocktails
8 private karaoke rooms with state-of-the-art systems
A dessert and tea café serving bento boxes, shaved ice, and sweets
An outdoor patio perfect for events and al fresco dining
At this new location, karaoke—the beloved Japanese creation (from kara, “empty,” and oke, “orchestra”)—takes center stage, offering a fun, unforgettable way to celebrate, whether solo or with friends.
The Spirit Lives On
Today, Goemon restaurants are more than a dining option. They set a stage for stories, a place for celebration, and a sanctuary for community. From birthdays and company parties to spontaneous nights out, Goemon brings people together with food, drink, and song.
